Piccolomini had the money and influence to transform his home village, humble Corsignano, into what he believed should be the utopian city, exemplifying the principles and philosophy of classical times and the great Italian Renaissance. Pienza became the realization of a dream! The project was designed by the architect “Il Rossellino” under the guidance of the great humanist Leon Battista Alberti. In just 3 years, incredible and harmonious constructions were completed: the Cathedral, the Papal or Piccolomini Palace, the Town Hall and the lovely central square on which all these buildings overlook.

Gothic art, thanks to contacts with France and Venice during the 14th century, is one of Siena’s most fascinating features. One of its most interesting examples is the famous cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, as well as the Duomo and some elements of the Palazzo Comunale located in Piazza del Campo. For almost a century, between 1200 and 1300, Siena played a leading role in Europe thanks to its mercantile aristocracy and intense banking activities. After losing its independence in 1559, Siena experienced a period of decline until the mid-19th century, when it began to grow again with the construction of the railway, connecting Siena to Empoli, and with the first university hospital in Italy , founded in 1883. Art is therefore what has influenced Siena the most, making it one of the most visited tourist cities. The Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, the Palazzo Comunale and the Torre del Mangia attract visitors from all over the world. Other attractions of Siena are wine and food, the Cantina Italiana located in the Medici Fortress, its traditional sausages and ancient desserts, such as ricciarelli biscuits, panforte (famous Sienese sweet/giambellotto), copate nougat delights and horse biscuits.

During the return journey a violent epidemic broke out and, thanks to the Lord, when the plague ended, he founded the monastery which was later built on the Abbey. The ancient abbots had the title of Counts of the Holy Roman Empire. Since 1992, the Abbey of Sant’Antimo has been resurrected through the presentation of a small community that follows the Rule of Saint Augustine. The garden grew gradually, between 1925 and 1939. The house is surrounded by a formal Italian garden, divided into geometric ‘rooms’ by box hedges with lemon trees in terracotta pots. Travertine stairs lead to the rose garden and to a winding wisteria-covered pergola, bordered by a lavender hedge. Gentle informal terraces ascend the hill, where cherry, pine and cypress trees grow among wild gorse, thyme and rosemary, and a long avenue of cypress trees leads to a 17th-century stone statue. Through the woods, a path connects the garden and the family cemetery, considered one of Pinsent’s best creations.

These free thermal baths are called, in common language, “White Whale”, due to the monumental limestone formation that the thermal waters, flowing for tens of thousands of years, have sedimented along the course of the river. The enormous limestone boulder, both for its rounded shapes and for the white color typical of limestone rocks, closely resembles how, in the popular imagination, Melville’s famous Moby Dick is represented, that is, the White Whale from which today these Free bathrooms are named after them.
